Children's Apron/Smock

I finished a handful of children's aprons/smocks for SimplyJune. As I mentioned yesterday, they are made of oilcloth and are easy to wipe clean - perfect for the aspiring painter, baker, playdough sculptor or current messy kid. I added cotton twill ties and the neck strap can be adjusted simply by tying a knot. The main color on each apron varies from orange, to pink, to lime green. I'm still editing some photographs, but check them out in the shop soon.

Nikolai and I had a nice visit this morning with the lovely ladies at our adoption agency. I love visiting and especially with Nikolai, but I had a quiet moment as I arrived remembering the dozens of times I drove there before Nikolai was ours.

A Sneak Peek

I'm busy in my studio working on quite a number of things this week. Here is a sneak peek at one project for Simply June - Oilcloth Children's Aprons/Smocks. I love this vibrant wipe-clean cloth and started by making one for my little tyke and now I'm going to share them with you. I hope to have these up in the shop by the end of the week, but I'm also working on Nikolai's 2nd Birthday Party coming up this weekend! We are going to celebrate with just our immediate families this year - our first birthday with Nikolai!

Birthday and Baby Goodies

I love making things, but I especially love creating when I have someone particular in mind. You know how a certain style or fabric can remind you of someone. We all have our own personal style and I think without meaning to, that is how identify people. I don't mean in a materialistic way. But, I identify with people in a very visual way - colors, experiences together, styles, etc. You can learn a lot about someone by the way they express themselves. So, when this
Amy Butler fabric arrived, it had by friend Elizabeth written all over it. Here it is as a purse and delivered yesterday for a special birthday.

And to a new Miss Elizabeth Rose, these onsies are on their way to you for your summer wardrobe. I made these using iron-on applique paper and some rose fabric from my stash. I sealed off the fabric edges with Fray-Check and machine outlined the applique both for added wearability and detail.

Candlelit Evening - Part III

Now this is just getting ridiculous. The transformer blew yet again on our street, which has suddenly become a hoppin' place on a hot summer night. Jason ran to the basement this time to flip off the circuit breaker as we still had a bit of electricity literally buzzing through our wires. This time we flew out of our homes in droves looking to see what on earth could have happened this time. As we stood on the sidewalk we were rewarded with firework type display as wires popped and snapped and burned. After we all exchanged our plesantries, we wandered back to our dark homes to light candles and ponder yet again what people did before electricity. Here's hoping for a well lit evening!

As you can imagine, I haven't been getting much done in the evenings, but I have been busy working on a number of gifts and ideas for SimplyJune. I promise to share soon!

A Candlelit Evening - Part II

I wish I were writing this second excerpt because there were fascinating details left out of Part I. However, we spent a second evening by candlelight as the transformer blew on our street again. Such an event causes quite a phenomenon even on our busy street. People who have been hunkered down in their homes telling tales by their air conditioners, actually emerge from their dwellings and stand in somewhat of a stupor on the sidewalks while the shock of the summer heat wears off. Jason, Kolya and I of course hightailed it to our local air conditioned Target to pick up survival supplies - three flashlights and a new lighter. After, returning home and tucking our babe into bed with flashlights, we settled down to another night of storytelling and mending - I mean watching another movie on my laptop.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I took a trip to Global Thrift in Waltham last weekend and here is one of my delicious finds (49 cents each!). I love this shade of petal pink. The cup is creme on the outside and petal pink on the inside. I want to sip strawberry milk from it and eat shortbread biscuits. Mmmm.

A Candlelit Evening

It sounds romantic, maybe even a step into the past for an evening. Our power went out around 7 last night. As the sun began to set, we rushed around looking for some flashlights with no success. I light some candles and some lanterns and with a peaceful sigh, looked around my home and thought about what it might have been like to live in the days before electricity. It seemed romantic and quaint. That was until I began to sweat without the air conditioners and ceiling fan. We have been having a heat wave here in the Boston area and the house heated up quickly even in the evening hours. You don't realize how reliant you become on electricity. The phone no longer worked, the TV, microwave, ICE MAKER, etc. So Jason and I sat down to a candlelit dinner of sandwich wraps and tortilla chips and reminisced about the days of old... ok, we watched a movie on my laptop. Pretty sad...

It was a nice weekend however, we enjoyed time with friends and family. Took a trip to the library and to a great thrift shop in Waltham called Global Thrift. I'll share some of my finds in the next few days. I keep meaning to add a photo of a cute vintage etched glass that I found at a church sale. It is tiny and etched with a beautiful floral and striped design. The sides of the glass are beveled adding to its charm. The perfect glass for a bedside table.

A Simply June Summer

I have been putting a great deal of work into the SimplyJune website this week. On Sunday, Jason helped me take some product photographs and patiently arranged clothespins, held up laundry line, suggested camera angles, etc. I'm pleased with what we accomplished and am now adding those products to the website. The last few days have been spent only on the computer, with no sewing time. So, I am hoping to get in a tiny bit of sewing during nap time today once the magnet sets are up.

I hope to add a few more products this summer as well and I am busy in my studio coming up with ideas and trying new things out. I would really like to add some embroidered goods to SimplyJune as well. Keep visiting the shop for new additions!

Purses: Pretty in Pink

I have been working on designing a new purse for SimplyJune - just the right size to be used every day. I love a purse with one strap that tucks right under the arm and here it is. I have made a few small design changes along the way from my initial concept and I think I have found that perfect balance of pretty and practical. This cutie is on its way as a belated birthday present..., but look for more in the SimplyJune shop soon. I have ordered a nice palette of fabrics and some may feature vintage buttons and trim. You will have to wait and see...

A Blueberry Summer

When I was a little girl growing up in New York state, my family and I would visit the south shore of Massachusetts every summer and stay in a cottage right on the beach. The cottage, loving named "Merry Gale" was built in 1940 by my Great Great Uncle for my Great Aunt Mary. He used lumber from his land surrounding the family cranberry bogs. The cottage is quite simple and the rooms are partitioned with walls, but the roof is the only ceiling. I would lie quietly each night as a child staring at the wood roof, discovering different figures and designs in the knotty planks. Those images were as clear as day to me and still are - my favorite being a pig with an eye patch wearing a striped bandana. My bed was the best part of my room though, it was built into the wall and pulled down lengthwise suspended by ropes and metal pulleys. We spent two weeks every summer at Mary's cottage nestled between the river and ocean and now Kolya will do the same.

Another favorite pastime at the beach was blueberry picking. There was a beautiful blueberry farm nearby and we would go there at the beginning of our stay every year to pick buckets of blueberries to enjoy with cream and sugar and in a bread pudding recipe I fondly called "Blueberry Stuff." Over the years, my father purchased blueberry bushes from this orchard and others and now has his own "blueberry farm". But, blueberries still always remind me of the summers at the beach.

I was recently talking with a friend who has started decorating her kitchen with a blueberry theme, so these blueberry tea towels are off to her. Enjoy!

On another blueberry note, if you have never read a copy of Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey, pick one up today! This is a favorite children's book to many and the illustrations a must see for any blueberry lover. It is sure to be Kolya's favorite book too as we sit on a beach blanket eating blueberries and reading...

Church Fairs

One of my favorite types of rummage sales are church fairs. The selection is usually large and varied - people emptying out the contents of their attic and basement to raise funds. The owners of these items are not usually present at the sale and therefore prices don't tend to reflect sentimental value.

I take my yearly pilgrimage to a church fair in a small town on the south shore of Massachusetts every July. They boast a huge variety of events and sales and fill a whole tent with treasures from books to glassware and other ephemera. However, the real treasures I believe are found in the basement sale they fondly call "Attic Treasures." I take my first tour on Friday afternoon, but the real deals can be found on Saturday afternoon when one can fill a bag (huge shopping bag) for $1! I start with the glassware and other knickknacks including old stationery and Christmas decorations and make my way over the tables piled with clothing. Some would have no interest in digging through others "trash" to find their treasures, but I consider it a challenge and am always rewarded. I fill my treasure bag until it is bursting at the seams and with a happy sigh leave my favorite basement until next year. (I should also mention that this was my first toddler toting year at the fair and while I have a delightful son, no toddler is all that interested in rummage sales. My wonderful husband donned our baby sling and entertained our tyke while I relished in my bargaining glory. Thank you Jason!)

This year, however the fun did not end in the basement. As we were leaving I noticed a sign on a tree reading "FREE". I tried to casually stroll toward the tree as there was no one around, but in actuality, that stroll was probably more of a dash. Okay, I dropped everything and ran... I looked down into the boxes as the base of the tree and couldn't believe my eyes, three beautiful glass punch bowl sets including, as I later would discover, 59 punch glasses! I have been mentally planning a SimplyJune shopping party for the Fall. I daydream about glasses of egg nog, funky jazz renditions of old Christmas carols and hostesses with vintage aprons and scrumptious hors d'oeuvres. Now I can serve punch! Further scouting through the "free" boxes revealed a set of plates marked "Rhythm by Homer Laughlin". The bowls are a bit worn and the platter has a small chip, but the design just drew me in. I did a little research and found that this pattern came out in 1955, but I think you will find its beauty transcends 50 years and could just as easily be sold today. I may have to search out some more of this set for my collection. As I sit here typing at the dining room table, I have it set with my new dinnerware. Jason, commented upon arriving home yesterday, "Are we having guests?". Though, I would gladly entertain guests, the table setting was merely for my own enjoyment.

Crochet Design

The scarf I pictured the other day was a design found in Debbie Stoller's new book Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet - The Happy Hooker. Yes this is still a G-rated blog, but I can't help the title of the book. It has a lot of great crochet patterns and ideas and some very detailed instructions and illustrations if you are new to crochet. I love the scarf I made from the book and was inspired to design my own scarf so that I can pass it on to you at the SimplyJune store. I have a ways to go, but here is my first attempt at designing a scarf.

On another note, every crafty girl should have an assistant and this crafty girl is no exception. Lucas is quite an assistant and quite the inspiration. Plus, who can resist that cute little smile. Here he is assisting me last night by keeping my seat warm - a very thoughtful pooch.

Funky Fabrics

I'm branching out - taking my timid design self to places I have never gone. :) I have an eye for design, but a very conservative one. I like patterns and designs that are safe and work - the tried and true. I don't mean the familiarity found in vintage designs, but rather taking that leap to combine colors, textures, designs, eras, concepts, etc. that one might not initially think would work together. I've always been afraid to try, but I'm feeling a little more daring and trying to challenge myself in that way. The background and bottom two fabrics are comfortable to me. They have their own boldness, but they are definitely in my comfort zone. The top four fabrics scream color and are definitely out of the comfort zone, but hopefully you will see them soon in my new daring design persona. Ah, I guess the first step is always recognition...

(Despite being the tried and true, I love this fabric combo and can't wait to make a cute little purse with which to stroll along the beach in the summertime.)

I have been busy crocheting too and experimenting with some patterns using what I have in my yarn stash. Having finally reorganized my studio, I found quite a bit of yarn that I had forgotten about. Here is a cute thin scarf of a nice length to wrap around a couple of times - cozy and cute. I'm desperate to wear it, but alas I will have to wait until Fall.

Summer Dress and Bloomers
Sewing, sewing, sewing...and finally back to blogging. I've been busy working on a number of projects and collecting materials for others. I have recently acquired a number of beautiful prints and am mentally designing some new handbags that I would like to get on paper shortly.

The pink rose dress and bloomers is a gift for my little friend Baby Sarah. I love little girlie summer outfits and had this cute pink print in my cotton stash. It has been a while since I have sewn clothing, but it went really smoothly and I'm happy with how it came out. Maybe you will find something similar on Simply June in the future. Again, so many fun things to sew, so little time...


I have also finished a nice number of the hand towels and am waiting for a sunny day to photograph them outside. I'm thinking of doing a group shot with them out on a drying line hung using the vintage style of wooden clothes pins. I found some at a yard sale recently. They themselves are not vintage, but I think will give me the look I want in my photographs. I like photographing my wares outside as I can never get the lighting I like inside. Eventually I will invest in some better lighting, but in the meantime outside seems to be my best option.

As I mentioned, I have been collecting materials for other projects I would like to work on. Here is a bundle I purchased from NZBug on Ebay. Check them out at www.nzbug.com. They make beautiful children's clothing and once in a while sell fabric remnants on eBay. They sent me my fabrics in such a cute little bundle that I felt like I was getting a present! The first two prints are by designer Amy Butler and are from her Charm collection. The third is a beautiful almost gauze- like cotton imported from Europe.

Skirts

I didn't used to like wearing skirts that much, but have really fallen in love with them over the past couple of years especially with all of the pretty vintage looking fabrics out there. I keep meaning to make a pattern from some of my favorite skirts so that I can use some of the retro repro fabrics I find. I just took a book out of the library on this subject and hopefully it will help in that endeavor. The photo to the left is of a skirt I just bought on ebay. The brown satin ribbon is just above the hemline and the skirt comes to about mid-calf. Very cute and my favorite blue brown combo.





Kolya is going through a phase recently where he wants to be held constantly. I love holding him, but after a while my arms feel like they are going to fall off. I finally decided to buy a baby/toddler sling from Lucky Baby (www.lucky-baby.com) and it arrived today. I bought the cute one displayed on their homepage with a brown lining. I think they used an Alexander Henry fabric. They have a great sense of style and color at Lucky Baby as well as an incredible product.

Happy Father's Day

This is Jason's first Father's Day. Kolya and I took a trip out to a store in Bedford on Friday where we had seen these beautiful bamboo plants recently. I made the little shirt and tie card from an old Martha craft using some scrapbook paper that I had. I think it makes a fun little card and would be a great craft for kids to do too. To celebrate the day we also had Chinese takeout and watched the World Cup. It is in the 90s today and just unbearably muggy and hot, so we are trying to take it easy.

Summer Days

It is one of those really beautiful summer days - sunny, warm, slight breeze... I went out in front of my house to snap a couple of pictures of my flowers. I love purple. I don't know what it is about that color. I find myself drawn to it. For example, I will be standing in Target in the shampoo aisle trying to find something I like and hopefully a sale. Now, I have a few brands that I favor, but I am more likely to buy the bottle with the purple stripe than the one with the blue or red for instance. This is a little sad when the purple one is meant for a different hair type, but what to do? There used to be a little shop in Faneuil Hall Marketplace in which every item was purple. I guess I'm not the only one out there! Unless, that is why they went out of business. I never bought anything...

I took a trip out to a fabric shop about 45 minutes from my house today. I had a coupon and wanted to pick up some Pellon stabilizer for some purses I am going to make. I looked at our local store, but they were out. I found some great clearance fabric while I was out there and got a few yards for a rainy day.

Print Blocks

I've recently become interested in old textile print blocks. I just bought a great one on Ebay and am dreaming up some ideas on how I want to use it. I'm hoping to get to the craft shop today to buy some Jacquard Textile Paints and maybe some type of roller to spread the paint on the print block. I would like to try it out on a T-shirt and then some paper products too - hand printed cards, wrapping paper, etc.

I'm going to heat set my labels today and sew them into my dishtowels. If we have some sunny weather this weekend, I hope to get some photographs of my new wares outside and get them onto the website.

Labels

I have been working on coming up with some new labels for some of my designs. In the past I ordered some labels from a great company in Australia ( www.apparellabels.com.au ). I am really happy with my white on black woven labels and they look good in both my handbags and hats, but I wanted something a little different for the dishtowels and aprons and other things I have in mind. I e-mailed a number of by favorite craft bloggers out there and contacted some companies, but didn't find exactly what I wanted or I should probably say the price that I wanted. I've tried a varitey of ways to make them on my own, but just have not had the result I wanted. Anyway, I finally came up with an idea that worked. I ordered a rubber stamp from Simon Stamps (www.simonstamp.com)! I was able to send a file of my logo and they made me a stamp for under $10! I then tried quite a number of brands of inkpads with varied success and ended up with a fabric paint pen which I color in my stamp with and then stamp on cotton twill tape. I let them dry overnight and then heat set them with my iron the next day and wahla! I have labels. I just made a batch yesterday which are going to be sewn into my dishtowels.

Parties

I really enjoy planning parties and coming up with little details to make them unique and special. My dear friend's son just graduated from High School and they threw him a big party on Saturday. It had a carnival/boardwalk theme with a delicious varied menu highlighting Mexican cuisine. I made menus to place on each table to add some more color to the festivities. I used some great wrapping paper that I found in the clearance corner at the Container Store (now one of my favorite places to stop). I feel so organized in that store. How is it that you can pick up a few plastic containers and suddenly feel like you have accomplished something and that your life is going to have so much more order? Anyway, back to the party. I wanted to put together a graduation gift and had come up with the idea of a laundry theme. Somehow your life revolves around laundry in college. There is usually no time to do it and suddenly it seems much more logical to own 30 pairs of underwear and just go home once a month with your car full of laundry. I found a great article on how to do your laundry with some helpful tips - even I learned a couple of things. I adapted it a bit and made a little laminated booklet on a metal ring and put together some other helpful laundry products. How many stuffed bears holding diplomas and wearing a mortar board do you really need? Who designed the graduation cap any way?...

Thrifty Giftbags

I read a lot of craftblogs for inspiration and am always reading about great thriftstore finds. Our local thrift store just never has anything unique. However, yesterdayt I took a road trip with Kolya to a thriftshop about 40 minutes from our home. It was a sunny day and just seemed like a day for a drive. I have a small stack of Mapquest directions in the car to various distant craft stores, fabric stores, thrift stores, etc. for those days when I just need a drive and want a destination. Well, this thrift store turned out to be the perfect destination. I still did not have any luck finding vintage sheets, fabric or housewares, but I did find some great new giftbags and boxes at .25 a piece! They are made by a company carried a the Container Store as well. Here are just a few of my finds. I love the colors and various shapes. I love gifting little goody bags and these are a treat in themselves. Wouldn't you just love getting a fancy cupcake in the clever pink and brown box?

I'm still working on my dishtowels and hope to get some up later this week. I really want to overhaul my website a bit too, but that may have to wait. So many ideas, way too little time to design...

Birthday Bliss

Well, I celebrated my 31st birthday yesterday, June 1st and had an absolutely wonderful day. To start with, my little Kolya slept in until 9:30 (we've had a busy week and he has a touch of a cold). The only other time he has slept in like that was on our anniversary. What a thoughtful child! I am convinced it was his present to me. Anyway, I got a couple of hours to myself in the morning and worked on the overhaul of my studio space. I am trying to get really organized and am slowly sifting and sorting. After a fun morning with Kolya and his naptime, we drove out to a fabric store about 45 minutes from our house. I picked up a few fabrics to add to my little line of dishtowels as well as some natural cotton and polyester twill tape. It is hard to find the cotton
twill tape and I was hoping to find some in white, but so far no luck. I think I am going to try another fabric store today. We returned home and I got ready for an evening out with Jason. Kolya spent the evening with some dear friends and we had our first evening out since bringing Kolya home. We had dinner at my favorite Greek restaurant, which I would seriously eat at every night of the week if I were rich. :) We ate every last speck of food on our plates (even the waitress commented) and we rolled on home to give Kolya a nighttime snuggle and kiss ... a really wonderful day.

Dishtowels

Well, don't think I'm fickle. But...I'm back to dishtowels today. :) I made my first dishtowel as a gift for a friend's birthday and included some great French Milled Soaps from Trader Joe's (www.traderjoes.com). I recently posted about the Michael Miller fabrics and towel fabric by the yard that I found at my local fabric store. I picked some brown grosgrain ribbon up at another shop to accent the fabric and I like how it came out - useful and stylish. I love the blue and brown combo and the retro feel.

Rummage Sales

Well the other day I loved dish towels, but today I LOVE rummage sales. This is really my favorite thing about summer. I'm not really a great lover of the outdoors. I like being at the beach and enjoying the cool breeze, but I hate sand in my shoes and frizzy ocean hair. I don't like sticky hot heat and getting burned on my seatbelt buckle or mosquito bites, but I LOVE rummage sales. I spend all week obsessively checking Craigslist (www.craigslist.org) for new listings. I love words and phrases like "HUGE", "VINTAGE", "ESTATE SALE", "GIANT", "MOVING OVERSEAS", "EVERYTHING MUST GO", "MULTI-FAMILY", "CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP!", "FREE"! If you post it, I will come... Anyway, this long holiday weekend was a bit of a rummage sale dud as was to be expected, but I still made it home with a couple of finds including a jar of vintage buttons and an old colorful tin perfect for keeping more buttons in!

This week I'm trying to organize my studio a bit. It is really a mess and I spend more time trying to figure out where things are and what I have than actually creating anything. Then I have to move my crafting down to the dining room table because I have covered all four - yes four :) of my tables in my studio while trying to find something. I purchased a big box of plastic shoe boxes from The Container Store (www.containerstore.com) a while ago and I am slowly sorting through my stash and putting them in these containers to be labeled. Hopefully, along the way I will find those pretty labels I bought for such an occasion. I love reading magazines like Real Simple (www.realsimple.com) to find creative ways of storing my stuff but somewhere between idea and reality I get lost. :)

I'm Back

I can't believe I haven't been able to sit down and work on Simply June since December! But, I'm back and ready to create! As I have mentioned on www.simplyjune.com, my husband and I have been in the process of adopting a little boy from Russia for over a year. We took our first trip to meet our son Kolya (Nikolai) just before Christmas. In all, we took three trips to Moscow and finally brought our precious son home last month. As you can imagine, we have all been adjusting to our new life together. But, we are all doing well and Kolya is a growing, happy and healthy 22 month old! My craftiness is now fit into naptimes and evenings and I am so inspired by so many crafty Mom's out there as I read their craft blogs. Thank you for your inspiration!

I have recently been working on these magnet sets for Simply June. The magnets are made from glass and come in a variety of fun designs. The actual magnets themselves are heavy duty button magnets and work great at keeping your favorite photos and artwork on your fridge. These sets will appear on www.simplyjune.com shortly and will sell at $7.50 for a tin of six. These make a great gift to just let someone know you are thinking about them.


Here are a couple of new fabrics for a new product line I hope to create - dishtowels. I have to admit that I love dish towels. They can really add a lot of color and design to your kitchen. I especially love old retro designs and I am hoping to infuse a bit of that into this new project. I'm hoping to get a few done next week and have them up at Simply June. This fun blue and brown fabric is a design by Michael Miller called Disco Dot. The retro kitchen print is another Michael Miller design called Domestic Goddess. I have a number of other fabrics in mind for this project including some Amy Butler designs, but I need to do some searching online as my local fabric store was really low on their selection.

Reindeer

While the main purpose of this blog is to share some of the behind the scenes happenings for Simply June, how could I resist putting in this picture of a cute reindeer I saw playing in my back yard today? O.k., it's my dog Lucas, but what a cutie and what a patient dog. :) Plus, hopefully some day I will be able to launch Simply Dog...

Studio Sweet Studio

I have this great poster hanging up on my French bulletin board and just had to share. It came in a recent Veer catalog. Check them out at www.veer.com . Wall Hooks

I originally started looking for unique wall hooks to display my bags while photographing. I ended up finding a setup that works better for me, but I now can't get enough of these great hooks. I plan on hanging a bunch of them in my new studio to display some of my bags. These two new finds are from Nadeau Furniture's warehouse sale in Boston's South End. They hold a sale once a month on a Saturday and allow you to walk through their warehouse for great bargains. Check out their website at www.nadeauimports.com as they are also located in other cities around the country. If you join their mailing list, they send you notices before each sale including a $20 gift certificate towards your purchases with no minimum! I got these wall hooks for free! :)

Vintage Hand Stitched Evening Purse

I had to include a picture of this wall art that my friend Elizabeth recently gave to me. The handle reads "Vintage hand stitched evening purse". It's perfect! I love the combination of a rough sketch, a finished pattern and a whimsical handle composed of words. It's found its perfect place in my studio. I actually recently moved my studio to a larger room in our house and am finding it to be a much more productive space. I have four large tables in a U shape holding my computer, printer, TV :), tabletop ironing board, sewing machine and cutting mat. Until this point, I would run into one room to work on my website (office), another to cut material (dining room) and yet another to sew my bags (guest room). My house is not that large... It brings me to my husband Jason's architectural school days when we would have bass wood soaking in our bathtub so it could be shaped for models. At that time we were living in a tiny apartment in Brookline that was not much bigger than one of his models. :)

Simply June Launch and New Fabrics

Simply June's online store launched Thanksgiving week and is off to a great start. It is so exciting to receive orders and hear how happy people are with their bags and hats.

A number of new fabrics arrived today, so I have attached a picture. I was hoping to update my Blog more frequently, but I have been too busy sewing!
